  1. Why did Ekalavya give away his thumb? To a guru who never even taught him.

  3. Ekalavya, a Nishada prince, came to learn archery from Drona. But Drona refused.

  4. So in the forest he made a clay image of Drona, and practiced in front of it.

  5. One day, a hunting dog saw him and began to bark.

  6. In the blink of an eye, he filled its mouth with seven arrows.

  7. Arjuna went to Drona. "You promised that no student would be ahead of me. But there is one."

  8. Drona reached the forest. Ekalavya bowed down at his feet.

  9. "If you are my student, give me my teacher's fee."

  10. "Command me. There is nothing I would not give."

  11. "Give me the thumb of your right hand."

  12. Smiling, he cut off his thumb and gave it.

  13. After that, his arrows never flew as fast again.

  14. Was this the guru's right, or the student's own choice? Write in the comments.
