  1. Did Shabari feed Rama berries she had tasted first? Valmiki never says so.

  2. Shabari's Wait.

  3. On the shore of Lake Pampa lived an old female ascetic, Shabari. She served the disciples of the sage Matanga.

  4. When Rama reached Chitrakuta, those sages went to heaven. As they left, they told Shabari: Rama will come, welcome him.

  5. And Shabari kept waiting, through the long years of Rama's exile.

  6. At last Rama and Lakshmana came. Shabari rose, joined her palms, and touched the feet of both.

  7. Shabari said: for you, I have gathered many kinds of forest food.

  8. That is all Valmiki says about her offering. No berry is named, and there is no word about tasting.

  9. The story of the tasted berries came centuries later, in a work by Priyadas, around 1712.

  10. At Rama's command, Shabari gave herself to the fire, and went to heaven, shining bright.

  11. A berry tasted with love, or years of patient waiting. Which touches your heart more? Write in the comments.
